Belgrade Early Music Festival

19 May 2019 - 09 Jun 2019
Belgrade, Serbia

Founded in 1991, Belgrade Early Music Festival is the first festival of its kind in Serbia. Devoted to the performance of music from Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments, during its rich 30-year history the Festival has welcomed such ensembles as New Trinity Baroque (USA), Sprezzatura (UK), Die Kölner Akademie (Germany), Block6 the Hague (Switzerland), Il Rossignolo and Concerto de’ Cavalieri (Italy), Artemandoline and cantoLX (Luxemburg), Antiphonus and Minstrel (Croatia), and domestic (Serbian) ensembles such as Renesans, Musica Antiqua Serbiana, Temenos, VisAntiqua, Flauto Dolce, Studio for Early Music, Belgrade Baroque, Melódi and the New Belgrade Opera. Soloists include contralto Marijana Mijanovic (Switzerland/Serbia), soprano Evelyn Tubb (UK), lutenist Michael Fields (UK), harpsichordists Steven Devine (UK) and Predrag Gosta (USA/Serbia), baroque trumpet players Friedemann Immer (Germany), Luca di Marco (Italy) and Justin Bland (USA/Norway), baroque violinists Ilia Korol (Austria), Florian Deuter (Germany) and Bojan Cicic (Croatia/UK), baroque cellist André Laurent O’Neil (USA), countertenors Carlo Vistoli (Italy) and Predrag Djokovic (Serbia), and many others.

The Artistic Director of the Festival is Predrag Gosta, internationally renowned conductor, harpsichordist and baritone. Maestro Gosta has been the most crucial and influential person in developing the Festival to its current renomé - in the recent years, the Festival has grown to a three-week event, with over 15 concerts in its main series, fringe concerts, as well as number of masterclasses and workshops in historical performance practice. A regular partner of the Festival is the Belgrade Baroque Academy, as well as the New Belgrade Opera, which presents a new baroque opera in conjunction with the Festival since 2013.

This year’s Festival will be presented from 19th if May until 9th of June. It will include the main concert series as well as the Belgrade Baroque Academy (our masterclass for baroque singers and instrumentalists) with a Young Artist Showcase. It will be presented in the following venues: the Kolarac Concert Hall and the Church of St. Peter in Belgrade. As last year, some concert performances may be repeated in other venues outside Belgrade, such as the Jewish Synagogue in Novi Sad.
