Båstad Chamber Music Festival 2022

27 Jun 2022 - 02 Jul 2022
Båstad, Sweden

2 Sides of the Same Coin

Båstad Chamber Music Festival is delighted to show case its 30th concert program in 2022. The theme for this Year’s event, 2 sides of the same coin, centres around duality and is inspired by the number 2 as in the year 2022, for example, pairs, reflections, apparent contradictions between things that are actually connected. The theme of duality is something that fascinates our artistic director, Catherine Winnes, now in her second year as Artistic Director for the Festival. The relationships between folk and classical music, man and woman, the visual arts and music are not as disparate as they may seem. The composer and artist Bjørn Kruse will show us that music and pictorial art are 2 sides of the same coin.

Not only do we celebrate our own anniversary but also the Swedish composer Hugo Alvén’s who was born 150 years ago and whose Swedish Rhapsody No. 1 will be played in the light Swedish summer night by The Swedish Wind Ensemble conducted by Cathrine Winnes.

We are proud to welcome a large number of extremely talented and renowned artists to explore the theme of duality through their music at this year’s festival. Nicolas Altstaedt, one of the most sought after cellists in the world, will be accompanied by two good friends, accomplished pianist Alexander Lonquich and the gifted violinist Barnabás Kelemen.. Kelemen is also the founder of the string quartet Kelemen Quartet which play together again, in a slightly different constellation, after a break of three years. They will all play music from their own countries.

Our young Swedish violin phenomenon Johan Dalene will play music by Stenhammar and Grieg together with the Norwegian Christian Ihle Hadland, a true craftsman of the piano. Håkon Kornstad who is a tenor and a saxophonist will perform a Tenor Battle with his trio. The virtuoso of timbre Ingfrid Breie Nyhus plays Norwegian folk music on the piano and will present improvisations with one of Sweden’s foremost folk music singers and violinists Lena Willemark.

An hour night in the middle of the day will loosen our phantasy and creativity when listening to music by Arvo Pärt and Benjamin Britten performed by the classical guitarist

Jacob Kellermann and the viola player Göran Fröst. Klara Ek, a Swedish soprano with a voice of remarkable clarity and beauty will present songs by Alma Mahler and Alban Berg.

Our varied and vast programme will be based in the Festival’s home, Apelrydsladan and for the first time at the new purpose-built arts centre Ravinen with its world class concert hall.

One of our key aims is to provide opportunities for young musicians and composers to perform alongside artists of national and international renown. The programme features performances by the 2022 finalists in the Kungliga Musikaliska Akademi competition, Alva Holm, Klara Andersson and Daniel Thorell. We are also committed to growing audiences for the future and are proud that entry to most of our concerts is free to under-18’s, as is our children’s concert.

Most importantly, it is its importance to the local community, which makes the Båstad Kammarmusikfestival an enduring success. Organised, managed and run primarily by a team of over 65 volunteers of all ages and from all sections of the community, this is a significant cultural event for the local community, as well as for Sweden. Without their support the festival just could not take place.
