Dubrovnik Summer Festival
The oldest cultural and artistic phenomenon in Croatia, one of the oldest European festivals and one of the most renowned site-specific theatre festivals, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival was founded in 1950 as an emblem of its city’s significant history and vibrant culture. Each summer, from 10 July to 25 August, the entire city of Dubrovnik transforms into a stage for the best local and international artists. The secret of the Festival’s longevity and a foundation for its future is the eternal seeking of truth, beauty, and artistic curiosity. Having recognized the importance of ambience, which is the Festival’s defining characteristic, the peculiarities of the broader Croatian dramatic heritage were gradually discovered, as well as the possibility of utilizing site-specific principles to place the heart of classic European dramatic works within the squares, palaces, fortresses and parks of Dubrovnik. During the 47 days of the Festival, domestic and foreign audiences of all ages, can enjoy a diverse programme that brings the best Croatian and international artists, Festival’s own productions and top guest performances. Last year's 76th Dubrovnik Summer Festival included a total of 79 theatre, music, ballet, folklore, film, art and children’s programmes which were held at 16 locations in and around the city of Dubrovnik.
