ENCONTROS MED [medieval / mediterranean]

28 Oct 2022 - 30 Oct 2022
Monsanto, Portugal

The ENSEMBLE MED [mediterranean/medieval] annually sets up a meeting of artists from the Mediterranean Basin in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal, an ancestral place where tradition, innovation and contemporaneity coexist, paying homage to the intangible musical heritage of its Mediterranean and/or Medieval roots, within written and oral tradition, mainly in Adufe / Framedrum playing.

The 4th Edition of ENCONTROS MED took place from 28 to 30 October 2022 in the Historical Village of Monsanto, with classes, public performances and lectures. The minicourse presented the medievalist Mauricio Molina (Barcelona / City University of New York), proposing the repertoire of Cantigas de Santa Maria by D. Alfonso X; Murat Coskun (Diretor Tamburi Mundi Frame Drum Academy) with “Rhythms of the Eastern Mediterranean” and Tiago Manuel Soares (Maria Monda, Retimbrar, Cardo-Roxo), who focused on New Approaches to Traditional Adufe and traditional songs from the Beira Baixa region.

The inspiration of ENCONTROS MED [Mediterranean/Medieval] is thus the delicate contact point between the universes of historically informed practice and historically informed traditional music, seeking its own interpretation of European medieval rooted music, performed around Iberia and the surrounding regions of the Mediterranean Sea, in a multicultural and transversal approach.

The project seeks to connect the intangible heritage of Idanha-a-Nova and the historical village of Monsanto - the valorisation of the Oral Tradition of the playing and singing of "adufe" of the region - with its places, such as the Church of Monsanto and S. Pedro de Vir-a-Corça.
