KoresponDance 2023

27 Jun 2023 - 16 Jul 2023
Žďár nad Sázavou, Czechia

The KoresponDance Festival will be held for the 11th time in 2023 - June 27th in Prague and from July 13th do July 16th (5 days). In 2022, the 10th annual KoresponDance Festival took place, which once again succeeded in bringing the festival's core dimension, namely the international dimension, to the festival. The Festival is thus fulfilling its vision of a cultural organisation performing a public cultural service with a responsibility towards the audience and the artists. In ten years, the Žďár edition of the festival has become a solid part of the cultural events in the Vysočina region, and KoresponDance, together with the Prague part, is one of the largest international festivals focused on movement art in the Czech Republic.

When the festival was first held in the Vysočina region in 2013, the audience came back in no time; the number of people attending the performances was 800. The peak came before the coronavirus pandemic, when in 2019 a total of 7,500 visitors came to the performance, almost 10 times more. During the covid, capacity was quickly filled due to health restrictions. Even though people were suffering during the covid and had a strong desire to travel after two years at home, all festivals still had an estimated attendance of up to 30% less in 2022, compared to KoresponDance 2022's total of over 5,500 admissions to performances.

Dance, new circus and physical theatre, or dance films, do not place language, cultural or social barriers in front of audiences, and can thus connect local audiences with global audiences.

The festival will feature more than twelve performances from various European countries, as well as from outside Europe. Many performances will move from one place to another, introducing concepts in an artistic and entertaining way. The festival takes place mostly open air and in public spaces. The festival will also take place in the town of Žďár nad Sázavou, in the Pilák recreational area, at the Castle, and thanks to this year's theme, at Green Mountain and Santini's Lower Cemetery. In Prague, the festival will most likely occur in CAMP - Centre for Architecture and Urban Planning, located in the "Prager's Cube" and with which SE.S.TA is working towards a cooperation agreement.

In 2023, the festival programme will be organised around the central theme called Architecture and Landscape, which includes three dramaturgical axes related to site-specific poetics. The themes will be developed through performances, workshops, masterclasses, discussions, seminars and conferences.

Dramaturgical axes:

- Architecture in the city (Žďár nad Sázavou and Prague)

- Santini and the play with numbers and symbolism (Žďár nad Sázavou)

- From inferno to heaven (Žďár nad Sázavou)

In Žďár, the festival will reflect the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the death of the architect Santini within the second and third dramaturgical axes, and in Prague, within the first axis, the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the architect Prager.
