Over the decades, the orchestra has repeatedly faced crises, but has always endured by asserting a clear and invaluable need for its unique and precious cultural and artistic mission. It has also changed its name several times — from the Niš Philharmonic, to the City Symphony Orchestra, and finally to its current name, the Niš Symphony Orchestra. The programmatic goals of the orchestra have remained unchanged for six decades: high-quality premiere performances, showcasing works from the global artistic heritage, engaging domestic artists and composers, and making lasting recordings of concerts…To popularize its work, the orchestra introduced several programs: Musical Morning, Four Music Cycles, the panel Music, Word, Color, Music of a Region – Thematic Concerts, Promenade Concerts to promote young talents, and Pedagogical Concerts to nurture audiences…In 1975, the Niš Symphony Orchestra founded and began organizing the Classical Music Festival October Festivities, which grew into the traditional music event Niš Music Festivities. In its rich concert activity, the orchestra has successfully toured all major cities in Serbia, as well as Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Italy, Greece, and the capitals of the former Yugoslavia. It has also performed at notable music festivals: the Dubrovnik Summer Games, Mokranjac Days, Olympus Festival in Greece, Niš Music Festivities, and others. For its significant achievements in its cultural and artistic mission, the Niš Symphony Orchestra has received numerous awards and recognitions: the Gold Plaque of the Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia, the Golden Badge of the Yugoslav Choir Festivities, the Liberation Award of the City of Niš, and the city's highest honor — the “January 11” Award in 2013.By decree of the President of the Republic of Serbia on February 10, 2023, and on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Niš Symphony Orchestra was awarded the Order of Sretenje (Third Degree) for outstanding merits to the Republic of Serbia and its citizens in public and cultural activities, especially in the field of musical art.
