Gaume Jazz Festival 2026
When the Gaume Jazz Festival was launched in 1985, no one could have imagined the scale and scope that the event would take on, not only in Belgium but also in the world of European jazz and, more broadly, in the history of the contemporary jazz scene. From its inception, the festival has drawn on the many qualities of JAZZ, i.e. not only its artistic values, but also its cultural, societal and humanistic values. Because JAZZ: ... was born at the crossroads of Western, African and classical musical traditions; ... reconciles written music with oral traditions; ... is open to cultures from all over the world without exception; ... reaches all social classes without any hierarchy; ... builds bridges between all generations, peoples and countries; ... has demonstrated its full potential to express itself in a multitude of different languages; ... integrates the practice of rigorous technique, the art of listening to others and the individual potential to engage in improvisation, dance, meditation, etc. After 41 consecutive editions, Gaume Jazz has built up an exceptional track record: 1,095 concerts (... Belgian and foreign productions), 97 creations, around a hundred Belgian premieres (including some very big jazz stars). With unwavering loyalty, it has distinguished itself by respecting a few priorities that have forged a strong, unique and courageous cultural identity: Quality jazz & new jazz musicians A culture of discovery off the beaten commercial track Stages open to creations by musicians from Wallonia-Brussels (often young) Broadening the jazz audience and reaching new audiences; Maintaining a festive spirit and reconciling artistic quality with a family atmosphere in a rural setting; As part of a professional dynamic, the festival has become a place for professionals to meet and exchange ideas. Despite the demands of these major choices, Gaume Jazz has built up a loyal audience that has grown over the years, while taking care not to fall into excess. In Rossignol, several thousand listeners (discerning enthusiasts, or a local audience mixing young and old, families, passing tourists or curious visitors, etc.) come together in a rare atmosphere of conviviality and human scale.
