Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival
The Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival gathers together the current performances of independent opera groups.
For the fourth time, the Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival will present a diverse review of creators and works at the Alexander Theatre from August 15 to September 1, 2024. The new program will be announced on April 2, 2024. The artistic director of the Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival is Reetta Ristimäki, and the event is produced by Greta Productions. Each professional group participating in the festival is responsible for the production of their performances.
The Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival was first held from August 19 to September 5, 2021, at the Alexander Theatre, and it is one of Finland's most extensive festivals showcasing the country's opera works and creators. The festival aims to preserve and highlight domestic chamber opera and musical theatre by offering freelancers and professional groups in the field the opportunity to present their works at Finland's old opera house. At the same time, the festival introduces the public to the most interesting and current performances from the independent sector, refreshing the significance of opera culture in our society.
The festival's leading partner is the Alexander Theatre, and the event is part of Helsinki Festival. Other partners are Music Finland, Theatre Info Finland, Theatre Centre, Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts, The Finnish Music Foundation, The Finnish Musicians’ Union, The Society of Finnish Composers, and Fennica Gehrman.
