Kammermusikfest Sylt - back to imagination

From July 25 to 30, 2026, the Chamber Music Festival Sylt once again invites you to a summer full of music – this time the festival opens the space for an artistic encounter with the world that has shaped us all: the world of childhood, which never completely lets go of us as adults. The next edition, however, is not a children's festival: rather, the cellist and artistic director Claude Frochaux invites the audience to experience the unique world of childhood in all its singularity. A world full of boundless imagination, carefree ease, and honest naivety – but also a cosmos that includes certain fears, dangers, and vulnerabilities. The festival invites you to change your perspective: on one hand, we as adults look through the eyes of children – with wonder, playfulness, and openness. On the other hand, we as adults view the world of children with reflection, longing, and sometimes even melancholy.

In the 6 festival days, musical fairy tale worlds, lullabies, journeys of fantasy, and magical beings, as only children can imagine them, are reflected. The program also offers a lot of precious musical literature dedicated to children or that can be understood as a personal reflection of the childhood memories of the composers.

In this spirit, the commissioned work of the Composer in Residence 2026, Pēteris Vasks, will also move, which he will write together for KmfSylt and the Dutch Stift Festival - and which will have its world premiere on Sylt.

The tradition of bringing a composer of international significance to the island every year and allowing the audience of the KmfSylt to discover a part of their oeuvre will continue in 2026 as well: with one of the greatest musical exponents of the Baltics. And this even in the extremely important year of his 80th birthday. On April 16, 2026, Pēteris Vasks will celebrate his anniversary, and the international music world will honor him with numerous birthday concerts. It is therefore a special honor to be able to welcome him to the Chamber Music Festival Sylt on the North Sea island during his anniversary year.

Content-wise, Vasks often deals with nature, focusing primarily on the mutual influence and coexistence of humans and nature, the sense of beauty, as well as the impending ecological crisis. "I want to give nourishment to the soul" – his compositions draw on archaic-folkloristic elements of Latvian music and place them in a tension-filled relationship with contemporary musical language – combined with a deeply mystical expression.

The audience of KmfSylt looks forward every year to a special selection of musicians and will not be disappointed in 2026 either: Artists from various countries such as the Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine, Israel, Chile, or Japan come together for a week of unique music-making full of energy and passion on the island. This year, the violinist Daniel Rowland, the pianists Matan Porat and Natacha Kudritskaya, the double bassist Uxía Martinez Botana, the clarinetist Pablo Barragán, and many other fantastic musicians will be participating.

The Sylt Chamber Music Festival organises 14 events in its six festival days at various locations on the North Sea island.
