Marionetas na Cidade began in 1998 in Alcobaça, Central Portugal.
The programme is extended to include traditional forms of puppetry as well as contemporary forms of puppetry and object theatre. It is a broad festival programming national and international companies and presenting shows, exhibitions, discussions, film series and workshops related to puppetry, either contemporary or traditional.
The festival is organised by S.A. Marionetas.
