The open-air opera and ballet festival “Stage of the Ages” is the biggest cultural event in Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval Bulgarian capital. The landmark event is staged annually in the natural setting of Tsarevets Fortress. It started in 1985, dedicated to the 800th anniversary from the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1185. Since 2008 the festival has been staged every summer on the open-air stage at the Palace of the Bulgarian Kings on Tsarevets Hill, presenting more than 70 of the best world and Bulgarian operas, musicals and ballet spectacles. This is the oldest and most successful cultural project of Veliko Tarnovo city, which attracts no less than 10,000 spectators every year.
