Paxos Festival started as a music festival in 1986 taking part on the small island of Paxos in the Ionian Sea, Greece every first fortnight of September mainly presenting 18th, 19th and 20th century classical music. Young musicians, graduates or post graduates of Music Schools in the UK, upcoming in the European music scene were invited to perform a series of 5-6 concerts within the hall of ex elementary school of Loggos village, Paxos in front of a multinational audience of summer visitors and locals. Since 2015 the festival takes place during almost all summer, expanding not only in time but also in type of music (jazz, traditional, contemporary), forms of art (film, exhibitions, art and music workshops), lectures on local knowlegde, guided cultural and historical tours, dance performances. Paxos Festival is proud of creating the ERGON contemporary music ensemble http://www.ergon-ensemble.gr/ as well as collaborating with the Ensemble Modern Academy of Frankfurt, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London), the National Opera (Athens - Greece), the Music Department of the Ionian University, Corfu (Greece) presenting its productions in venues in Athens (Athens Megaron, Stavros Niarchos Cultural Foundation). In 2009 Paxos Festival won first prize for the best peripheral festival in Greece from the National Foundation of Music and Theater Critics.
