SicilFestival 2026
The edition of the festival promoted by the Municipality of Oliveri was born with the aim of building a bridge between tradition and the new expressive forms of contemporary art, restoring to the community the most authentic meaning of creating culture: sharing, inspiring emotion, and passing on heritage.
The project is part of the cultural and artistic regeneration process that the Municipality of Oliveri has been pursuing for years, and it finds in SicilFestival the ideal context to highlight young talents and emerging artists who, through their works, reinterpret Sicilian identity using new and contemporary languages.
The festival is structured around artistic residencies, public performances, participatory workshops, and a large collective installation dedicated to the Opera dei Pupi, a universal symbol of Sicilian culture.
At the heart of the project lies an original theatrical performance which, drawing inspiration from the puppet tradition, tells a story of freedom and transformation: the puppets free themselves from the strings of their puppeteers — a metaphor for the human condition and modern dependencies — to discover a new form of autonomy and awareness.
The theatrical performance will be accompanied by a permanent artistic trail, featuring large iron puppets, installations throughout the historic center and the tonnara area, transforming the town into an open-air museum. These sculptures, created by a local artist from a historic family of blacksmiths, are intended as tangible and lasting symbols of the encounter between memory and innovation, between tradition and contemporary creativity.
The entire festival will revolve around the theme of rebirth — of art, of places, and of human relationships. Students, associations, artisans, and cultural operators will all be involved in a participatory process that combines training, performance, and beauty.
The artistic residencies will offer artists the time and space to work on new productions inspired by Sicily and its core values: hospitality, resilience, and light. At the same time, visitors will be able to take part in craft, music, and theatre workshops, discovering the experiential dimension of the festival, which seeks to create a direct connection between those who make art and those who experience it.
The Oliveri edition of SicilFestival thus aims to be a journey — from the ancient roots of our culture toward new forms of artistic expression. A communal experience, capable of uniting generations and sensibilities in a unique landscape setting, suspended between sea and mountains.
Beyond its artistic significance, the initiative also seeks to contribute to the economic and tourist development of the region, consolidating Oliveri as a cultural hub of the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. The presence of permanent installations will ensure both symbolic and material continuity, making the festival sites visitable year-round and extending the impact of the event well beyond its duration.
In an era where the fast pace of the world risks making us lose sight of meaning, SicilFestival – Oliveri chooses the slowness of art, the craftsmanship of iron, the poetry of the puppets, and the silence of the stories that only Sicily knows how to tell.
