Taifas Film Festival

TAIFAS – The Balkan Film and Culture Festival returns in 2026 for its fourth edition, continuing its mission of bringing audiences closer to Balkan art-house cinema while creating a vibrant space for dialogue between film, music, gastronomy, and contemporary culture. Held in Timișoara, Romania, between October 12–18, 2026, TAIFAS celebrates the Balkans not merely as a geographical region, but as a shared sensibility shaped by memory, emotion, contradiction, and connection. Built around the spirit of the Romanian word taifas — a meaningful conversation among friends — the festival explores stories about people, places, and intertwined histories. Through screenings, discussions, live events, and interdisciplinary encounters, TAIFAS creates an environment where cinema becomes both a form of reflection and a catalyst for community. This year’s edition focuses on history and memory in Balkan cinema, examining the ways film reconstructs, questions, and preserves the past. The 2026 program highlights works that engage with archives, personal recollections, fictional reinterpretations, and the politics of remembrance, opening conversations around both major historical events and overlooked “small histories” — biographies, communities, and forgotten destinies. Special attention is given to marginalized or omitted narratives and to filmmakers who experiment with time, montage, and archival material to bring hidden stories into focus. Alongside the festival program, TAIFAS continues its commitment to supporting emerging voices through its annual Research Fellowship Program, inviting young researchers to investigate how cinema shapes our understanding of historical truth and collective memory. More than a film festival, TAIFAS is an invitation to gather, exchange ideas, and rediscover the past through the transformative power of cinema.
