Velestúr 2026 - legacy of ancestors

Step back eleven hundred years. Festival Velestúr brings the world of Great Moravia, the Slavic 9th century, back to life for one weekend each summer in Badín, just outside Banská Bystrica. Wood smoke drifts over the hillfort, blades ring against shields, a singer's voice carries across the field, and for a day the early Middle Ages feel close enough to touch. Best of all, it is completely free, and made for the whole family.

This is living history done properly. Everything you see is built on real archaeological finds and the work of historians and archaeologists, so the costumes, the crafts, the food and the weapons are the genuine article, not fantasy. But do not expect a dry lesson. Velestúr is loud, colourful and full of life, an invitation to fall for the real past rather than the myths about it.

The heart of the 2026 festival is a rivalry between two hillforts, and the whole day builds towards their clash. Come and watch the hillfort games, gather for the ceremony, and enjoy a flyting, a fierce and funny contest of insults traded in verse. Take your place around the field for the great battle for the hillfort, where warriors meet in authentic combat. As the light fades, a live concert takes over, and the night ends with a fire show under the stars. There is something happening from morning to night, and something for every age. While the grown-ups explore the warriors' camp, the crafts and the talks, children have their own hands-on workshops and games, trying out old skills and playing their way into history. 

Wander between the stalls to watch textile weaving, jewellery making, metalwork and herb lore, breathe in the smell of period cooking, and ask the craftspeople anything. Many of them will happily tell you not just what they are making, but how we know people made it this way. Handle the tools, taste the food, and let the little ones test a wooden sword or try their hand at an old craft. Come and meet the people who lived here.

 Reenactors from across Slovakia, the Czech Republic and beyond gather at Velestúr in full early medieval dress, and their camps, fires and daily routines turn the whole site into a village you can walk through. You are not watching from behind a rope; you are stepping inside. The main programme runs all day on Saturday, 1 August 2026. On Sunday, 2 August, we head out on a guided heritage hike for anyone who wants to walk the landscape and hear its older stories. Bring good shoes, curiosity, and the family.

Getting there is easy. Badín sits a short trip from Banská Bystrica, and the festival grounds are open to everyone, with no ticket and no entry fee. Come for an hour or stay from the first game to the last spark of the fire show. Whether you are a history lover, a family looking for a different kind of day out, or simply curious about who lived on this land long before us, there is a place for you at Velestúr. As the afternoon turns to evening, the mood shifts from playful to epic. The rivalry between the two hillforts, simmering all day through the games and the sharp words of the flyting, finally boils over on the battlefield.
