Balkanik Festival #14 - The World Sounds Better Together
The 14th edition of Balkanik Festival - Home of World Music returns to Bucharest with three days of extraordinary music, contemporary art, cultural encounters and shared experiences.
Under the theme The World Sounds Better Together, the festival continues its exploration of living cultural heritage and the ways traditions travel, evolve and find new expression in contemporary culture. Since 2011, Balkanik has grown into one of Eastern Europe's leading world music festivals, bringing together acclaimed international artists, emerging voices and traditional musicians whose work crosses geographical, cultural and stylistic boundaries. Following a successful 2026 edition that welcomed 15,000 visitors, the festival returns to its new home in Tei Park, a two-hectare green space on the shores of a lake, with an expected audience of 18,000 in 2027. Music remains at the heart of Balkanik. The 2027 programme will feature international concerts, experimental collaborations, electronic music, DJ sets and spontaneous jam sessions, moving between Balkan brass, Anatolian psychedelia, traditional repertoires and contemporary global sounds. A major highlight will be Gabi Luncă Reimagined, an original production bringing together Romanian musicians to reinterpret the repertoire of one of the country's most influential traditional singers. Following the success of Romica Puceanu Reimagined in 2026, the project continues Balkanik's commitment to preserving musical heritage through new artistic creation.
Beyond the main stage, the festival unfolds across several interconnected spaces. The lakeside stage hosts major performances, while a woodland clearing becomes home to DJ sets and live sessions. A dedicated jam session area encourages spontaneous collaborations between musicians from different traditions and backgrounds.
Contemporary art and new media will play an expanded role in 2027. A series of immersive installations and video mapping interventions, developed with multimedia artists Adistu and Silviu Luda, will transform the park after dark, drawing inspiration from folklore, mythology and the natural landscape. The programme also features a creative market bringing together craftspeople, independent designers and artists; workshops and activities for children and families; talks exploring cultural heritage, identity and sustainability; and Taste the World, a gastronomic journey through the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East and beyond. The lake and surrounding parkland will offer opportunities for outdoor activities, relaxation and unexpected artistic encounters. The 2027 edition will also continue People of the City, a documentary and editorial series exploring the individuals, places and everyday practices that shape Bucharest's living cultural identity.
Community engagement and accessibility are central to the festival's vision. Through a multi-year partnership with Bucharest's Sector 2 administration, Balkanik will facilitate cultural participation for local residents, including children from social support programmes and senior citizens, while distributing 1,500 complimentary festival invitations within the community. With an international audience, a growing cultural network and a programme that brings together artistic excellence, experimentation and collective celebration, Balkanik Festival #14 invites visitors to experience a world in which differences become opportunities for discovery, collaboration and connection.
