Slowmotion Festival - Opatija, Croatia

Slowmotion is an interdisciplinary festival of music, film, contemporary performance and digital culture held each spring in Opatija, a coastal town in Croatia's Kvarner region. Founded in 2025, it brings together artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers, media creators, festival makers and cultural organisations from Croatia and neighbouring European countries. Behind every compelling work or cultural space are people worth meeting; Slowmotion brings them closer to audiences. Neither a conventional music or film festival nor a closed professional conference, Slowmotion combines a lively public programme with meaningful artistic and professional exchange. Talks, interviews, panels and presentations invite creators to share both their work and the ideas behind it. These encounters are complemented by film screenings and discussions with filmmakers, live music, performances, intermedia projects, hands-on workshops and informal gatherings. Topics range from documentary cinema, music and literature to podcasts, animation, gaming, internet art and new technologies. The festival is organised around a belief that contemporary cultural practices increasingly cross traditional disciplines and platforms. A film can become a conversation about music; a novel can travel into television, games or performance; a club or community radio station can become a centre for artistic experimentation. In a world shaped by screens and fast-moving digital media, Slowmotion makes space for slower, face-to-face dialogue, curiosity and unexpected connections.

The first two editions, in 2025 and 2026, established its regional profile. The 2026 festival presented around 60 hours of activity, with some 70 speakers and nearly 200 programme participants across four venues, attracting approximately 2,500 visits. Past guests include musician and performance artist Konstrakta, interdisciplinary artist Katalin Ladik, musician and presenter Ida Prester, internet-art pioneer Vuk Ćosić, writer Kristian Novak, filmmaker Igor Bezinović, director Maja Uzelac, podcast creator Galeb Nikačević and filmmaker and cultural figure Majda Širca. Concerts have included KOIKOI, Ki Klop and Turbo Trans Turisti. Three recurring strands express the festival's wider mission. “Festivals We Love” introduces inspiring festivals and the people behind them. “Places That Grow” explores cinemas, clubs, cultural centres and other organisations that create new spaces for artists and audiences. “Naprijed naši!” (“Local Voices”) offers emerging initiatives from Kvarner, Istria and beyond a chance to present their work and build connections with established national and international partners. Together, these strands make Slowmotion a meeting place for cultural ecosystems, not only individual productions. Education and access are equally important. Collaborations with the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka, secondary schools and local organisations bring students and young people into direct contact with professional artists and producers. Workshops have explored animation, podcast production, game design, sound and accessible cinema; screenings and related activities have also addressed inclusion for deaf, hard-of-hearing and blind audiences. Selected events are free, helping open the festival to a broader public.

Produced by Usta na usta and Festival Opatija, with partners including We Move Music Croatia (WMMC), Slowmotion aims to strengthen the visibility of artistic work outside major capitals while building lasting cross-border relationships. It welcomes exchanges with European festivals, artists and creative networks interested in interdisciplinary programming, emerging talent, audience development and the future of cultural spaces. Rooted in Opatija and connected to the wider European cultural landscape, Slowmotion is ultimately a festival about the people who make culture happen—and the conversations that lead to what comes next.
