Kirjakantti 2026 – Forest is a multidisciplinary literary festival that integrates literature, research, the arts, and societal dialogue. The 2026 edition examines the theme of Forest as a cultural, philosophical, and future-oriented framework, addressing questions related to sustainability, human–nature relationships, and societal resilience.The festival is organised over one week in November and takes place across multiple venues in Kuopio and the surrounding region, including libraries, higher education campuses, cultural institutions, and selected rural locations. A hybrid format ensures broader accessibility through online participation.The programme comprises approximately 25–35 events, including author discussions, panel debates, workshops, performances, and participatory installations. The invited authors represent a wide range of genres – fiction, non-fiction, poetry, essays, and children’s literature – offering diverse perspectives on the forest as both a material and symbolic entity.A central component of the programme is the Forest Panel, developed in collaboration with Savonia University of Applied Sciences. The panel brings together writers, researchers, and educational actors to address sustainability transitions, resilience, and the role of cultural narratives in shaping future-oriented thinking. The collaboration further includes student-led development of “fact–fiction” formats, combining research-based knowledge with literary and artistic approaches.The festival features the KAUK – Book Steps Out of Its Covers concept, an immersive and site-responsive installation that extends literary content into public and campus environments. This approach enhances audience engagement and lowers barriers to participation.Kirjakantti 2026 also introduces a targeted programme strand for entrepreneurs and professionals, focusing on writing as a method for articulating experiential knowledge and contributing to public discourse. This includes workshops and a facilitated writing residency in a natural environment.The festival addresses diverse audiences, including children, young people, young adults, and participants from varied socio-cultural backgrounds. Accessibility and inclusion are integral to the programme design. Measures are taken to ensure physical, social, and informational accessibility, including consideration of participants with special needs. The festival operates in accordance with safer space principles, promoting equality, respect, and non-discrimination.By fostering collaboration between cultural actors, educational institutions, and communities, Kirjakantti strengthens the role of literature in responding to contemporary societal challenges. The festival contributes to cultural accessibility, regional vitality, and the development of new interdisciplinary practices that support sustainable futures.
