In Memory of Heroes 2026
International Folklore Festival “In Memory of Heroes” – Corfu
The International Folklore Festival “In Memory of Heroes” is being held for the first time during the last week of September 2025 on the island of Corfu, in honor of the Serbian heroes and victims of the First World War. Born out of deep respect for the ancestors and the desire to preserve the memory of one of the most difficult yet most glorious chapters of Serbian history, the festival’s mission is to grow into a traditional annual event that connects culture, emotion, and remembrance through art and friendship.Corfu, the island of salvation for the Serbian people, is a sacred place where the destinies of Serbia and Greece intertwined more than a century ago. On this soil—marked by both suffering and love—the festival brings together folklore ensembles, singing groups, and orchestras from Serbia, Greece, and the diaspora, united in a common mission of preserving tradition and strengthening Greek-Serbian friendship.Throughout the festival week, visitors can enjoy open-air concerts, street parades, joint cultural evenings, and performances dedicated to Serbian and Greek folk heritage. Every performance reflects the richness of costumes, melodies, and dance steps, while participants exchange experiences, create new friendships, and share the spirit of togetherness that connects generations.A particularly moving part of the festival is its spiritual and commemorative program—a memorial service for Serbian victims on the island of Vido and a visit to the Blue Tomb, the resting place of thousands of Serbian soldiers. In moments of silence and prayer, as songs blend with the sound of the sea, participants express gratitude and honor toward those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. It is a moment when history, faith, and emotion become one—a memory that stays in every heart. In addition to the cultural and spiritual events, the festival also includes workshops for younger folklore ensembles, designed to educate new generations about the importance of tradition, the history of Corfu, and the values of cultural exchange. Through dance, music, and storytelling, young participants learn to appreciate their heritage while building bridges of friendship across borders. The founders and organizers emphasize that the festival’s goal is for “In Memory of Heroes” to become a lasting bridge of friendship between Serbia and Greece, promoting values of freedom, courage, gratitude, and unity. Every performance, song, and costume carries the message of remembrance and resilience—because culture is what keeps a nation alive and dignified. The festival is organized with the support of the local authorities of Corfu, cultural institutions, and tourism organizations, as well as partners from Serbia and the diaspora. In its inaugural year, 2025, the festival gathers 160 participants from 10 cultural associations, proving the great interest and enthusiasm to make this event a tradition that grows stronger each year.“In Memory of Heroes” is more than a festival—it is a movement of cultural preservation and historical awareness, an artistic and emotional bridge connecting nations, generations, and traditions. On Corfu, where tears once met the sea, songs are heard again—songs that do not mourn, but celebrate life and freedom. The festival aspires to become a permanent meeting place for Serbian and Greek folklore ensembles, artists, historians, and youth eager to nurture the legacy of their shared past. Each new edition will expand the program, deepen cooperation, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two peoples.“In Memory of Heroes” is not just an event—it is a pledge to the ancestors and a gift to future generations, a reminder that remembrance and friendship live on through song, dance, and the heart. 🇷🇸🇬🇷✨
