The annual literary festival Kirjakantti will be held for the 21st time in 2024 from 11 to 17 November.

The working title of the 2024 event is: Kielikublii (A Bubbling literature). In the event, regardless of genre, the importance of one's own mother tongue, and its power of expression as part of literary culture are highlighted, both in the writer's work and from the recipient's reader-experiencer perspective. The event examines the language through discussions, workshops, and various interdisciplinary performances. Writers, artists from other fields, researchers and experts from nationally recognised minority languages and minority language groups that do not have an official status in Finland are invited to the event. For example, 74 different languages are spoken in the Kuopio region.

The event is produced as a week-long event both live and more widely accessible by streaming the events. The authors and languages participating in the event will be selected during spring 2024. The event is divided as follows: Main event, Children's and youth Book Section, Nature and Science Section, Poetry Section, Prize Section, Publication Section and Book Section Club. As usual, the public can enjoy author interviews and events, seminars, literature clubs and workshops. In addition, the city's library organises: The book steps out of its cover (Kirja Astuu Ulos Kansistaan= KAUK) experience aimed at families with children. During the week of the event, the nominees for the Savonia award of the year will also be announced, the children's and youth champion contestants will be awarded, and the Martti Merenmaa award will be given. In addition, we will continue the cooperation started in 2022 with international nature documentaries and authors, as well as the verbal arts and literature workshops organised in rural areas during the year. In the international field of nature and science, the subjects of review are e.g. encounters between humans and animals in many different situations, how do we talk to and about animals and how is the presence of other species reflected in language? The main event venue is the main library of the city of Kuopio. Other places: University of Eastern Finland, Art Museum, Post Office, Cathedral, Girls' house, Pannuhuone, schools and daycare centers to be arranged later In addition, events and workshops will be organised throughout the year in the same way as in 2023 (see kirjakantti.fi)

The event is produced for literary professionals (incubators, author visits, discussions, workshops), to a local audience interested in literature and writing and via streaming across the province. For an international audience - international nature documentary filmmakers, immigrants, minority language communities, e.g. novel communities, for children and young people, their families and educators, and stakeholders. New audiences are brought in through various workshops and events held throughout the year. Accessibility, the possibility to participate in events remotely is ensured by streaming. The impact of the event in the literary and more generally cultural field is made by planning the event's artistic programme and theme-related event guests so that every year new openings are created, for example, in workshops, incubators and meetings between writers, performers and the audience held before and during the event. For example, in workshops related to the theme (mother tongue) together with local artists, new multi-art works and outputs are created for the public to see on multiple channels. The event is looking for experts in different languages, artists and experts, whose voice will be heard in a diverse and fresh manner in the interdisciplinary and artistic arena typical of the Kirjakantti event. The event is produced with different partners.
