Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival 2026
Every summer, the quiet hum of the Maltese islands transforms into a chorus of languages, rhythms, and ideas as writers from across the Mediterranean and beyond gather for the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival. Organised by the cultural NGO Inizjamed, the festival has, since its first edition in 2006, become one of Malta’s most vibrant and internationally respected literary events.Inizjamed works to promote contemporary writing, dialogue, and cultural exchange. Its flagship project, the Festival, reflects these ideals. Held annually in August, the festival brings together poets, novelists, translators, musicians, and readers for readings, performances, and debate. But it is much more than a sequence of stage events: it is a meeting ground where languages cross borders and writers discover one another’s voices.Beyond its literary readings, the Festival embraces a wide range of art forms and audiences. Its programme often includes poetry films, book launches, open-mic sessions, interviews, and discussions addressing current cultural and social themes. Venues vary each year – from the historic bastions of Valletta and Floriana to the artistic spaces of Spazju Kreattiv, Teatru Salesjan, and Vincent’s Eco Farm – each location offering a new setting for creative exchange under the Mediterranean sky.The festival’s success rests on collaboration. Inizjamed works with both Maltese and international partners such as Arts Council Malta, the National Book Council, and Versopolis. The event also bears the EFFE Label (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe), recognising its artistic quality and cultural impact. Each edition hosts a mix of Maltese and international authors – seven writers from six countries in 2025, for instance – whose readings are presented in their original languages alongside translations into Maltese or English. Through this multilingual tapestry, the festival celebrates difference while revealing unexpected common ground.Having now reached 20 editions, the Festival continues to embody the principles on which Inizjamed was founded: openness, artistic integrity, and a belief that literature is a tool for dialogue and transformation. In the heat of the Maltese summer, words cross seas and centuries, finding new listeners and new meanings. The Festival remains not only a festival of literature but a living testament to the power of shared creativity in the Mediterranean world.
