Month of Ukraine (Měsíc Ukrajiny)

Měsíc Ukrajiny / The Month of Ukraine is a festival of Ukrainian culture organised by Městská divadla pražská / Prague City Theatres. Established in 2023 as a direct cultural response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the festival has become a regular annual platform dedicated to Ukrainian art, contemporary theatre, civic dialogue and cultural solidarity. It takes place symbolically between 24 February and 24 March, marking the beginning of the full-scale war while creating a sustained space for encounter, reflection and support. The festival is unique in the Czech Republic. It presents artistic work from Ukraine as well as Czech and international projects dealing with Ukraine, Ukrainian culture, the experience of war, exile, resistance, memory and identity. Its programme combines theatre productions, staged readings, exhibitions, discussions, lectures, interdisciplinary projects and events for different audiences, including families, Ukrainian communities, Czech spectators and the professional cultural public. The main goal of Měsíc Ukrajiny is to keep Ukraine visible through culture and art. The festival supports Ukrainian artists and cultural institutions, opens space for their voices in Prague, and strengthens dialogue between Ukrainian, Czech and international artistic communities. At the same time, it emphasises a clear anti-war position and expresses long-term solidarity with Ukraine not only as a country under attack, but also as a living, diverse and highly dynamic cultural space.
