The 7th International Festival of Puppet Theatres for Adults: Puppets' Metamorphoses

The 7th International Festival of Puppet Theatres for Adults “Puppets' Metamorphoses”, organised by the Białystok Puppet Theatre, is one of the very few European festivals dedicated exclusively to contemporary puppet and visual theatre for adult audiences. Since its inception, the festival has sought to challenge traditional perceptions of puppetry and demonstrate its capacity to address complex social, philosophical and artistic issues through innovative theatrical languages. The 2027 edition will bring together artists and theatre companies from Poland, France, and many other European and non-European countries, creating a vibrant platform for international exchange and intercultural dialogue. The programme will present a wide spectrum of contemporary artistic practices, ranging from object theatre, shadow theatre and visual storytelling to interdisciplinary productions combining puppetry with movement, music, digital media and performance art. The festival’s carefully curated programme reflects both artistic excellence and diversity. Alongside productions by internationally recognised artists and companies, audiences will encounter innovative works that explore current social realities, questions of identity, memory, migration, family relationships, mental health, cultural heritage and contemporary myths. Several productions presented during the festival are the result of international collaborations and co-productions, underlining the importance of artistic mobility and cross-border cooperation within the European cultural landscape. Beyond the performances themselves, “Puppets' Metamorphoses” serves as a space for reflection, discussion and knowledge exchange. Daily meetings between audiences and artists will encourage deeper engagement with the presented works and foster meaningful dialogue between creators and spectators. These encounters will be complemented by a bilingual publication documenting the festival’s achievements and examining its contribution to the growing recognition of puppet theatre as an art form for adult audiences. Deeply rooted in the cultural life of Białystok, the festival actively engages local communities while simultaneously building international networks. Cooperation with the Białystok branch of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art creates opportunities for young theatre-makers to present their work and engage with leading practitioners from across Europe and beyond. Through this combination of local participation and international collaboration, the festival contributes to the development of future generations of artists and audiences. Accessibility remains a fundamental principle of the festival. All events are offered free of charge, ensuring broad and inclusive access to high-quality cultural experiences. The realization of the festival is subsidized by public funding from the Białystok City Hall and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The festival welcomes audiences of different ages, backgrounds and levels of cultural participation, while implementing measures that support the participation of people with disabilities. “Puppets' Metamorphoses” is not only a celebration of artistic excellence but also a platform that promotes cultural diversity, intercultural understanding and active audience engagement.
