49º Estoril Lisbon Festival

23 Jun 2023 - 09 Dec 2023
Estoril, Portugal

A festival well established in international institutions dedicated to the arts, benefits from a privileged position to divulge the history and heritage of its roots.

The Estoril Lisboa Festival guided by this principle is a long journey. Lisbon has a vast heritage more than five centuries old, rich in history and in architectural beauty that, little by little, has come to be included in the festival due to several anniversaries celebrated in recent years. This accumulation of enriching and unforgettable experiences, will continue in 2023 with the beginning of two new cycles of complementary features: “Portugal in the European Renaissance” and “Festival in the Parishes”, allowing the inclusion of the Palace of the Marquis of Alegrete, Palace of Ega, Palace of Mitra or the Church of Madre de Deus, places that enrich the heritage and diversity of the festival.

With “Portugal in the European Renaissance” a window opens for the dissemination of personalities and works which, being of first world magnitude, are not always known in proportion to their value. Francisco d’Holanda and Damião de Góis will be examples evoked in the vocal music. In this first cycle, the similarities and differences of Portuguese music from the 500s are confronted with those of Spain, Italy and Flanders. Vocal groups Ars Lusitana, Cupertinos and Vocal Ensemble, make their journey taking with them the absolute premieres of works commissioned from Miguel Diniz and João Caldas. In the first, the relationship is evoked of Francisco d’Holanda with Michelangelo and Italy, while the second is inspired by Damião’s relationship from Góis with Erasmus and Flanders.

In a complementary perspective away from the center of the Capital, the “Festival nas Freguesias” gives rise to a stimulating project where the quality of the most distinguished young chamber groups joins the heritage local architectural project to build a cultural and social action in favor of a more needy public.

In this spirit, two symbolic “Concerts for Peace” with the Ukrainian pianist Antonii Baryshevsky are included; German, Spanish and Italian Romanticism; the Organ Cycle and the premiere of the “meeting”, by hands by Nuno Côrte-Real and Florbela Espanca with Cole Porter.

The festival does not stop at the past and is continually open to the future. It always accommodates young people who have won awards in various competitions.
