FREI ART FESTIVAL 2023 - Dance and Culture Festival in Freiburg

From September 11th to 17th, 2023, Studio Pro Arte in Freiburg will transform into a vibrant hotspot for the international dance scene. Returning for its 4th edition, the FREI ART FESTIVAL promises a week filled with impressive performances, inspiring workshops, and interactive experiences for all attendees.

This festival attracts dancers from around the world and welcomes dance enthusiasts of all levels. Renowned artists from across Europe will lead workshops in Contemporary Dance, Modern Dance, and Urban Dance, offering opportunities to learn new techniques and find inspiration for one's own dance practice. This year's lineup includes Joe Alegado, Laura Aris, Lali Ayguadé, Rainer Behr, and many other instructors who have performed with major dance companies.

The stage program features contemporary dance, interdisciplinary performances, and pieces tailored for a younger audience. "OZ - The Wizard Within Us," choreographed and performed by Freiburg native Joy Alpuerto Ritter, takes the audience on a dance journey, translating the fantastic story of the wizard into an urban dance fairy tale. Javier Rodriguez Cobos presents "Pink Panther," a solo performance that humorously and exceptionally examines the world of dance and film. The interactive piece "kreuz & quer" by tanzmainz invites children aged 3 and above to participate and marvel. Laly Ayguadé, who will also conduct a workshop, presents her company's piece "Runa," delving into themes of transience and time. The artistic and accessible stage program aims to appeal to a diverse audience and showcase the diversity of dance.

A festival highlight is the Out:liers Dance Contest, bringing together dancers of all styles to provide a platform for innovation and dance experimentation. Dancers perform spontaneously to live music, competing in multiple rounds, but the focus is on the special moments that arise through interaction between the audience and the dancers.

In addition to the performances, FREI ART CONNECT offers a networking event for international program directors and curators from festivals, production houses, and venues. This provides an opportunity to build contacts and collaborations in the dance and culture sector.

For families, the festival offers a special program called Studio-Moves. Children and parents can explore the world of dance together through interactive workshops, performances, and a Kids-Dance-Contest while engaging with professional artists from around the globe.
