EFFEA Residencies: Nature & Culture

01 Oct 2025

EFFEA Stories: a journey through the residencies that explored how culture's spheres and evolutions shape our approaches to nature, and vice versa. From community relationship with food and traditions to Land Art, led-light mycelia and installations, let's give the floor to these intricate natural and artistic evolutions.

Presented here are four stories by artists and festivals who participated in EFFEA Calls #2 and #3, each recounting their artistic journey.

EFFEA is an initiative of the European Festivals Association that offers emerging artists a platform to develop their international careers through festivals in multiple countries. EFFEA extends an open invitation for festivals to work across borders and create a network of colleagues with shared goals. It recognises that the future lies in the synergy of diverse perspectives and collective efforts. Through their artistic languages, emerging artists across Europe are using their voices to inspire change, bridge divides and highlight the importance of unity in today’s world.

EFFEA Story: Alessandro Businaro

Hosted by Teatro in Quota in partnership with Les Longues Journées

Deja Vu focuses on the relationship between rituals, memory and food, and on how this relationship can shape the identity of a community. The project is inspired by sagre - Italian ritual festivals where local foods are at the centre. Each participatory site-specific performance emerges from the social context in which they are set, allowing spectators to become protagonists, cooking alongside them and sharing personal and collective memories related to that dish and the region.

Through art, technology, and interactivity, it evokes wonder, curiosity, and reflection on our interconnectedness, emphasising technology's impact, while highlighting the significance of human connection and the intricate network of individuals, ideas, and environments.

EFFEA Story: Olga Grybowicz

Hosted by Bella Skyway Festival in Toruń in partnership with Blik Blik festival in Pilsen and Fjord Oslo

The Stem installation depicts fragments of vegetation of unknown origin, sprouting in surprising places: its stems surface in the waters of the park at Bella Skyway Festival, and reach, adapt to different urban spaces - spreading to the Partner festivals' venues. This way, the artwork, as natural elements in a sense universal presence in different parts of the world, and on the other hand, is constantly subject to change.
