Festival Theme: BODY AND THE EMBODIED WORLD
“the world, the body, the devil I overcome…”
Our era clings to extending physical existence—even by a single day—yet at the same time it is deeply disembodied and uncertain about what to do with bodily life itself. Is the contemporary cult of the body truly an exploration of our embodied nature, or rather the culmination of an endless drive toward optimization and perfectibility? Are our bodies merely an inconveniently chosen substrate—mortal and difficult to repair—for algorithms governed by natural or mathematical laws?Or, conversely, is the body a manifestation of the Earth’s elements?Time spent moving in nature is shrinking, while time spent indoors is growing. Our homes increasingly resemble artificially created caves, where almost everything is made by machines. Connected to everything, yet often alone, we spend a large part of our lives immersed in digital technologies that gradually penetrate our bodies. The return to sensory experience of the world has become a major theme in both art and environmental thought. As Eliška Fulínová notes: “The affluent West is utterly obsessed with bodies—their transformations and control. The fiercest ‘culture wars’ are fought over them. And not to mention how many new and bizarre forms of corporeality humans are creating in the environment itself (plastic islands, nuclear waste, …).”
