“Count me in!” is all about sharing stories that highlight diversity, equality, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) in the seat of art festivals. In this series you will hear their stories, and see how we can all make a difference by standing up for each other.
In these challenging times for Ukraine, Kharkiv Music Festival (KharkivMusicFest) has become a powerful symbol of resilience and unity, placing a strong focus on supporting youth and fostering community bonds, even in the face of significant obstacles. From the beginning, supporting youth has been an important part of the festival. That’s why we started the Children’s Symphony Orchestra and Young Composers’ Competition were established to nurture diverse young talent, fostering inclusion by welcoming children of different musical levels and backgrounds.
Even though we had to pause for a while in 2022–2023, we’re so glad to have the Children’s Orchestra back. Rehearsals now take place in a basement, where the kids can focus on their music in a safe and welcoming environment. We’ve also recently opened up the door of our rehearsal space for the "Spring Voices" Children’s Choir, an incredible group with a 90-year history that’s been struggling to find a secure place to practice.
It’s amazing to see these young singers carrying on such a rich tradition, and we’re happy to support them in keeping that spirit alive. For so many of these kids, especially now that most schools in Kharkiv are fully online, these in-person gatherings are a big deal. They give them a much-needed sense of connection and belonging. Many of the children tell us that these rehearsals help them find a little escape from everything going on around them, bringing a bit of peace and stability to their lives. Through such initiatives, KharkivMusicFest embodies DEIAB values, creating a supportive, inclusive, and healing space for young musicians in these uncertain times.
