[Zoom-in] Beyond the City: Festivals in Rural Europe

Lara Esteban - 28 Oct 2026

Across Europe, festivals are not only found in major cities. In villages and rural communities, they bring people together, transform familiar spaces into places of creativity, and offer new ways to experience local traditions and heritage.

From music and theatre to contemporary art and traditional craftsmanship, the six arts festivals featured in this article play an important role in local cultural life. They create opportunities for exchange between residents, visitors and artists, while celebrating the unique identity of the places that host them. They embody what the EUFEAST – Festive trails for a sustainable tomorrow Horizon EU project has examined: the role of local festivals in promoting sustainable tourism, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening communities.

Inspired by this initiative, in which EFA is a partner, we have gathered a selection of festivals taking place very soon in Italy, Spain, France and Hungary.

Epicenrico Festival

Epicenrico Festival
18 December 2026 - 26 March 2027
San Giorgio di Nogaro and surrounding municipalities, Italy

Our journey beyond the city begins in north-eastern Italy, where theatre finds its place in the villages of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The Epicenrico Festival brings performances, workshops and artistic encounters to four municipalities, including Porpetto and Gonars. By turning schools, public spaces and local venues into places of artistic expression, the festival makes contemporary theatre accessible to communities beyond major cultural centres. Its collaboration with schools and local organisations also encourages lasting connections between artists and residents.

Valley of Arts

Valley of Arts

Kapolcs and Vigántpetend, Hungary

What if an entire village became a stage? In Hungary's Balaton Uplands, the Valley of Arts brings this idea to life. For more than three decades, the festival has transformed village streets, courtyards and everyday spaces into venues for music, theatre, dance, literature and visual arts. Bringing together local communities, artists and visitors, it celebrates the meeting of contemporary creativity and rural traditions, while placing sustainability and cultural dialogue at the heart of its programme.
