[Zoom-in] Music meets heritage

Christina Michael and Isabela Zambrano - 07 Jul 2026

Across different regions of the world, cultural events often find their most powerful expression when they take place in historic settings. From medieval monasteries and ancient amphitheatres to landmark cultural venues, these environments enrich artistic experiences and foster a strong connection between heritage and contemporary performance. These settings celebrate both living tradition and artistic expression within extraordinary architectural and cultural landscapes.

This selection highlights four international festivals that take place in remarkable historic settings, where music and heritage come together to create unique cultural experiences.

Cistermúsica 1

Cistermúsica – Alcobaca Music Festival
26 Jun – 31 Jul 2026, Portugal

Celebrated as one of Portugal’s most prestigious and established festivals, Cistermúsica transforms the historic Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into its symbolic and artistic epicentre. Organized by ABA – Banda de Alcobaça, the festival offers a diverse and accessible programme featuring leading national and international performers in music and dance, while also activating lesser-known heritage spaces that are opened to the public specifically for the occasion.

Over its three-decade history, Cistermúsica has played a key role in developing new audiences for the arts and in promoting both tangible and intangible heritage, reinforcing the powerful dialogue between contemporary performance and the architectural and historical legacy of the Cistercian tradition.
