INTERPLAY/ 26 International Festival of Contemporary Dance & Performing Arts
INTERPLAY International Contemporary Dance Festival, which will reach its 26th edition in 2026, is the longest-running event in the region for contemporary dance and performing arts. Between the end of May and mid-June each year, it presents emerging and mid-career artists, with performances both in theatres and in urban spaces around the city. The selection is the result of extensive scouting of the contemporary scene, but also thanks to the establishment of numerous international collaborations.Interplay artists represent the new generation of contemporary dance, established companies that contribute with their bold and rigorous aesthetic choices, taking us towards new choreographic dimensions and bringing us closer to unexplored territories. Over the course of the years, INTERPLAY has hosted companies that have now become the excellence of the contemporary scene. On the international landscape: Omar Rajeh, Christos Papadopoulos, Marco Da Silva Ferreira, Leïla Ka, Jan Martens; while in the Italian context, Virgilio Sieni, Enzo Cosimi, Alessandro Sciarroni, Silvia Gribaudi, just to name a few.The outdoor dance section of the Festival, created in synergy with local cultural and artistic organisations, also reaches the suburbs, taking dance out of theatres in an important audience engagement and development initiative, helping to increase social inclusion, as well as promoting the local area by involving the public in different urban contexts. In fact, a distinctive feature of the outdoor programme is its accessibility and inclusiveness, with free events allowing anyone to experience dance without physical or economic barriers. Thanks to its innovative vision and cultural commitment, the Interplay Festival has been awarded the prestigious European EFFE Label since 2015, a label that recognises the best international festivals. Not only programming, since 2007, Mosaico Danza has been one of the first organisations in Italy to become partner in two important international networks: Les Réperages and Dance Roads. A few years later, we joined the national network dedicated to emerging artists: AnticorpiXL. Mosaico Danza was the first to launch the INSIDE/OFF project, a programme of choreographic residencies in Turin, hosting 162 artists in our performance space between 2007 and 2017 (converting a hybrid environment - between a garage and a lemon house - into a functional and evocative rehearsal room at the Mosaico Danza headquarters). Mosaico Danza is partner of Étape Danse, a trilateral project for international choreographic residencies that aims to promote promising new creations by significant choreographers on the contemporary scene from France, Germany and Italy. The French partner is La Briquetterie CDCN Val-de-Marne and the German partner is Fabrik Potsdam. The project supports the production of new creations through an exchange of residencies and international production support. In 2022, the INTERPLAY festival has been the winner as project leader of the EFFEA Call, a project of the European Festivals Association, co-founded by the European Union and supported by the European Commission for Creative Europe. The aim of the call is to support the mobility of new creations by emerging artists through cooperation projects with other European dance and performing arts festivals. The festival was then selected as the winner of the next two EFFEA calls in 2023 and 2024 as a project partner.Today, thanks to winning two important tenders: PNRR TOCC for Ecological Transition, funded by the European Union, within Next Generation EU, and PN Metro Plus Città Medie del Sud “Torino, che cultura!”, funded by the European Union, we have inaugurated the LIVING LAB, a multifunctional space surrounded by greenery, totally eco-sustainable, for artistic residencies, workshops and performances.
